Certificate in Private Investigation
Program
Get the private investigator training you need to join a challenging field, where job growth is anticipated at more than 25% through 2014. The escalation in Internet crime, identity theft, increased litigation, security concerns within corporations, and the need for protection of confidential information and property are some of the factors contributing to this trend.
Students in the Certificate in Private Investigation are diverse, having included active duty police detectives, currently licensed private investigators, people who work in the ancillary areas of law enforcement, homemakers and college-age young people interested in the field.
These private investigator courses are conveniently scheduled on Saturday, and have an informal atmosphere where everyone can feel at ease and enjoy learning about a unique industry.
The Certificate in Private Investigation consists of five required courses totaling 60 hours of lecture and discussion. The certificate graduate will receive 6.0 Continuing Education Units (CEU's), a nationally recognized unit used for professional development.
Program Objective
Graduates of this certificate program will:
- Have legal knowledge and a professional understanding of the basic principles of investigation
- Understand the criminal justice process and how it relates to the private investigator
- Have studied the various practices and techniques utilized in conducting private investigations
- Be able to determine the facts surrounding a crime, examine a crime and properly gather evidence, develop witness statements through the interviewing process
- Have the necessary skills to conduct investigations in specialized areas such as insurance fraud, personal injury, surveillance, skip tracing and missing persons
- Be able to integrate and use the knowledge acquired to perform case studies
- Know how to create opportunities for employment through networking and other resources

Eligibility
Students with a minimum of three year's investigative experience may request to waive the "Introduction to the Profession of Private Investigation" class. Students interested in waiving this class need to submit a "Request for Waiving a Course" form and register for "Course Waiver: Private Investigation" (Fee $55 - nonrefundable).
